NO COST

Here are a few things you can do quickly and easily and which will cost you nothing.

  • Borrow an energy monitor from us
  • Make an appointment for one of our Area Energy Officers to come round with our light bulb library
  • You can borrow the bulbs for a few days till you are sure of the choice
  • Turn off lights when you don't need them
  • Turn appliances off standby
  • Turn your room thermostat down by 1°C
  • Review the times your heating and hot water come on and off
  • Take short showers instead of baths
  • Don't overfill the kettle
  • Run your washing machine at 30 or 40°C and only when full
  • Run you dishwasher at 55°C and only when full
  • Dry clothes outdoors whenever possible
  • Turn down radiators in unused rooms
  • Choose the most efficient electrical appliance available
  • Choose the smallest appliance available

 

LOW COST

Here are a few ideas that won't break the bank.

  • Replace all your lightbulbs with low energy ones.
  • Draught strip all external doors and windows.
  • Fit draught strip to your letterbox.
  • Check the insulation on your hot water tank.
  • Insulate hot water pipes.
  • Fit shelves above radiators on external walls, and put foil behind them
  • Check the depth of your loft insulation and top up if less than 300 mm

 

LARGER INVESTMENTS

These may cost more up front but will pay back over time, so are worth considering

  • If you are buying new a new boiler, choose the most efficient 'A-rated' one
  • Find out if you can insulate your loft or cavity walls
  • Find out if solar panels would be suitable for your house
