STORIES FROM LOCAL RESIDENTS

A few of the residents who have been seeking advice from our area energy officers have some encouraging stories to tell. One householder lives in a 2-bedroom end terrace house which used to suffer from damp in the bedrooms. Since Rural Stirling installed Cavity Wall Insulation the house retains its heat better after the heating has been switched off. “The house feels warmer and my heating bills have stayed the same even though the prices have gone up. The damp patches have not reappeared in the bedroom yet this winter for the first time since I moved into the house 10 years ago.” In the meantime, this householder has also become actively involved with the Allotments and Community Garden project and started to buy meat from a local farm shop. “It’s good to be doing something as part of a group, part of the community, and I really hope it carries on.”

Another Callander resident was horrified to learn of her family’s energy use. Using the energy monitor was quite a revelation. “It definitely helped change some of our habits. We don’t overfill the kettle anymore and use the tumble drier less often.” Their electricity bill has in the decreased already and they have decided to have loft insulation installed and change their boiler in the future.

The owner of a local B&B was pleased to have become involved. Although she was already trying to do her bit, she feels her family has in the meantime become more aware still. They are now monitoring their travel habits more closely and trying to grow their own food, as well as food for their business. “Having the support of the people involved through Callander and Climate Change has been extremely helpful; both in discussions and practical advice. We would hope to continue this dialogue through attendance at meetings and keeping up to date with information circulated locally.”
